Head Island

Located in the Pointe au Baril/Bayfield area of Georgian Bay (more particularly in the Naishcotyang River basin), Head is a 60 acre island with freehold title to the 11 � acres at the western portion. This is an absolutely classic Georgian Bay island, in a realm of its own. Stunning groves of white pine are interspersed throughout the island�s vast expanses of smooth pink granite which gently grade to the water. There are spectacular views in all directions!

History

Early in the 1950's, a young couple, Mac and Lil MacDonald, purchased the property from the Crown and transformed it into a fishing and hunting camp, constructing a series of individual and self-contained cottages. Much of the original furniture, created from peeled birch logs, remains today. The MacDonalds even developed large gardens, still in cultivation, producing plentiful fruits and vegetables. For over 30 years the island was the destination of many who wished to experience the rich fishing and hunting grounds of the Naiscoot Basin.

Main Cottage

 "Great Hall" The impressive BC fir timber-frame main cottage was completed by local craftsmen in 2000. The classic �Georgian Bay Style� sloped roof with generous overhang provides ample porch area for guests and family to gather, even in inclement weather. The keystone to this structure is the central two storey fireplace featuring hand-chiselled granite stone gathered from the island. A second storey �Widow�s Walk� lookout affords 360 degree views of sailing vessels in the main channel to the west of the island. There are two fully furnished identical master bedrooms each with three piece ensuites. The spacious open plan kitchen is powered by a combination of solar and propane with an on-demand back-up generator system.

The Guest Cottages

The six guest cottages, all refurbished, are strategically located throughout the property, providing maximum privacy and all affording wonderful views. Each cabin is entirely self-contained (living, dining, kitchen, bathroom, screened porch, many with fireplaces) and furnished, in some cases, with the original peeled birch log furniture produced by the first owners of the island.

Harbour

A massive Inukshuk marks the entranceway to the front harbour of Head Island. A series of floating docks provide ample tie-up for any number of boats, even up to 40 footers. An alternative to boat access is by helicopter - pictured here is a smooth rock area ideally suited to helicopter landings.

Activities on Head Island

The regulation tennis court is located in the interior of the island, in a glade of pine and cedar trees allowing play even in windy weather. A series of walking trails connect the islands of Head, providing islanders the opportunity to experience the abundant bird (over 14 varieties of warblers have been identified on the island) and wildlife: otter, mink, muskrat and deer. Bathers can enjoy the crystal clear waters of the island from countless swimming holes off the smooth granite rocks or the natural sand beach of Head Island. Fishing is still superb throughout the Naiscoot and Charles basin - anglers set their sights for black bass, walleye, perch, northerns and even the elusive muskellunge. Berry picking is a wonderful ppursuit as the island abounds in blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and cranberries. Or at the close of an active day, just return to one of the cottages and relax with a favourite book in front of a wood burning fireplace.
